SupportOne of the unifying themes of both stages of our “Faces of the Ukrainian Dream” project has been “Ukrainians are Unbreakable.” This theme reveals not only the resilience and courage of our people during wartime but also their deep humanity, their ability to support, help, and keep the light alive even in the darkest times.
A special role in this theme is held by the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine, who stand in defense of our state. Among the images created by the children, the figure of the woman defender-mother, sister, daughter, is especially emotionally perceived, becoming a symbol of strength and inspiration.
In 2024, our NGO launched not only a children’s project but also a separate initiative to support women in the military – the project “For HER.” We were deeply moved by how children recognize and convey through their drawings and stories the role of women in the armed forces. Here are some striking quotes from young participants:
“I drew a portrait of Yulia Mykytenko, which I plan to give her, so she knows she is remembered and respected. She is an image of Ukraine’s unbreakability! My Yulia is beautiful and brave. Such are our women who are now on the frontlines defending our freedom and independence.”
“Our soldiers are our defenders. Special respect to women who left their children safe to go defend the Motherland.”
“I wanted to show the contrast between peace and war, to convey the value of our culture that we defend, and the strength of women-defenders, volunteers, and those waiting for their loved ones to return from the front. This work is a way to express my emotions and remind us of what we fight for.”
“In my drawing is the portrait of a woman as a symbol of Ukraine. Her face bears the trident, with signs of struggle. In her head is an enemy knife symbolizing Russia’s military aggression. But her gaze is unbreakable. The embroidered shirt, braided hair, and burning city in the background – all this represents our strength of spirit and the price of freedom.”
In every drawing, we see a deep understanding of the strength, sacrifice, and inner beauty of women soldiers. Children intuitively feel that the fight is not only about weapons but about love, loyalty, the pain of waiting, and boundless hope for return. This perception shapes a future where memory and gratitude become the foundation of a conscious and humane society.
